Camp Quality “Adventure-Ship” Sea Adventure

This was Camp Quality’s most challenging activity program to date! Senior Campers and their companions were sent off for a full two- day sea adventure on the Adventure-Ship.

Day One - Strict training

The dangerous single-plank bridge: This bridge was a very thin, two-metre long plank (allowing only one foot in front of the other). One end is attached to the ship and the other end is placed in a raft. The children were required to climb down the rope ladder from the ship and walk along the single-plank bridge to the other end. The sudden floating and sinking motion made the activity more difficult. The most frightening aspect was that no life vests were allowed, so those who couldn’t swim tended to be more scared and thus fell into the water more easily. The companions task was to jump into the sea to save them!

Training your physical energy:
We had to raise our teammates using our hands and climb over the huge crossbeam which is the height of two adults, One of the companions had to sit on the crossbeam to coordinate with the campers. Unbalanced teammates will fall into the deck.  The children had to walk to the other end and use their hands to support the feet of their teammates climbing down and lower them down slowly. The activity required a lot of physical energy such as lifting and lowering teammates, with plenty of running around!

Lion Dance over the Sea: A large piece of rectangular floating plastic was placed in the sea. It allowed only three people on at a time. Campers were required to pick up t hanging pieces of paper and the rest of the team had to align the floating enabling teammates to pick up the paper note. Moving the floating plastic already made everyone very tired. The high wind and waves made it even harder. After several rounds of pushing and pulling, the plastic was aligned but the teammates on it slipped and fell into the sea because of the waves.

Discovering the treasure of the Sea: This activity required more bravery than energy. It can be said to be the simplest training task. A one-metre long plank was extended to the sea, while the other end was pressed down by the weight of the teammates, allowing one teammate to step out and pick up the “treasure map”. Although a few campers were scared initially, they overcame their difficulty by the encouragement and support of other campers and the companions.

Hand in hand:
This seems easy but is actually the most challenging and difficult training of the program. It was virtually impossible to complete without the courage, energy, support, and cooperation of your teammates. One camper sat on the bow of the ship and with his right hand had to support a teammate who was walking over the side - while his left hand had to move the huge wheel hanging by the side of the ship. The campers had to step on the wheel, tightly grasping the hands of other teammates on the side of the ship. One wheel over another and one hand over another, the teammate walked back and forth on the ship. After completing this exercise, both hands and waist felt like they were no longer yours.  Everyone collapsed on to the floor to rest!

Day Two - Build up your bravery
Jumping! Jumping and more jumping…into the sea! The scariest part was the high diving from the Ship.  It was definitely a frightening experience and pretty much everybody was scared, grasping their hands on to the side of the ship tightly. Finally with much encouragement, most campers and companions completed the task. Luckily, it was the end of training.

After two days intensive training of the mind and body, campers and companions reviewed the program and shared their feelings. The biggest accomplishment gained from this program was that, we saw a few campers who were afraid at the start to try. However after finishing the five training tasks with the support and encouragement of the other campers, their morale was boosted considerably and it made them realize that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

Although, Adventure ship training was very tough, probably the most challenging to date, Camp Quality does it with much love, cooperation, encouragement and enthusiasm, which touches all!
