A Visit to Cathay
Pacific Airways
At long last we arrived at
Chep Lap Kok International Airport.
The threat of cancellation due to
a pending typhoon was long forgotten
and thirty-three kids and 8 volunteers
excitedly walked through the turn
stiles at Cathay City to visit Cathay
Pacific Airways.

The kids, most of them
new to Camp Quality, ranged from the
ages of 4 to 16 years old. For many
this was their first time 'going to
camp' without their parents and there
were a few tears along the way. This
however soon changed when they were
able to visit the mock-up of a jumbo
777 and actually got to have a snack
on an airline seat served by real
Cathay Pacific flight attendants!

As some of the kids
have not traveled before, they were
shown what First Class travel was
all about and were fascinated by the
mock-up galley, toilet and crew jump-seat.
They however soon learned how to use
the call button and were 'dinging'
for service constantly. Luckily we
had two beautiful and gracious flight
attendants to serve us.

Grace, the Cathay co-ordinator
then brought us across to the next
building to visit the Safety Training
Center. Along the way we had a glimpse
of the flight simulator of a 777 aircraft.
It was a pity that the kids were not
able to have a closer look but was
nonetheless impressed by how big a
simulator truly is.

At the Safety Center
the kids were able to see the actual
sizes of two inflated door slides
and a life raft. They were most keen
to try them out but with no safety
personnel present, we had to restrain
them. After a brief talk on safety
and the training provided to all flight
personnel, the kids were all given
inflight souvenirs as well as a book
on the story of Cathay Pacific Airways.

Our final stop was lunch
at The Rainforest Cafˆm at Festival
Walk, which was also a first for most
of the kids present. It was very amusing
to see their faces when the gorillas
roared or when the elephants trumpeted.
Some were even nervous when the lighting
and thunder unfolded, though this
did not stop the kids from scoffing
down a scrumptious meal.
