WATERSIDE VILLAGE & PANYU NIGHT ZOO TRIP
November 23-24, 2002

A group of over 35 companions and staff took a ferry ride to Panyu to meet up with over 30 excited mainland campers from the Sun Yat Sen Hospital.

The first event was a tour of the South China Waterside Village. Lots of laughter were heard when one of the companions was chosen to participate as the bridegroom in a local show.

The group thoroughly had fun watching the show and this was followed by a delicious lunch of local flavors. After which, the group went on to several small group boat rides of the waterside village, and in particular, they enjoyed riding the waves and the occasional bumps in the water here and there.

Next on to the Sunflower Garden where the campers had fun the feeding piglets, hovering among hundreds of birds and watching little squirrels dashing here and dashing there.

To complete the afternoon, the group was treated to a visit of the famous sunflower garden where stretches of sunflowers could be seen miles away.

Much excitement were generated on the bus on the way to the hotel as Q&A contest were held among the campers and companions who all scrambled to win a souvenir of sunflower seeds to take home and grow.

Dinner was a highlight event in itself at the beautiful Chim Long Hotel where the group was treated to a western buffet of many delicious eastern and western delicacies alongside an outdoor garden with 2 real tigers in view. Some campers were particularly pleased as this was their first experience to a western buffet, and so, took many small trips back and forth with their little great finds.

The excitement did not end here. After dinner, it was time for the long awaited tour of the Chim Long Night Zoo. All filed into a choo-choo train for a tour of the animal sites in the dark. The excited but restrained oo's and ah's occasionally clouded out the guide's narratives as we past by some rare species of animals. Still the excitement continued as we moved on to the highlight of the evening: the spectacular sights of the Chim Long Circus at the Amphitheatre where thousands of audience including our group were eagerly looking forward to some fun and excitement. The dangerous moves of the cartwheel performers and the trapezes were breath-taking and all in all, a thoroughly eventful and enjoyable night.

After the event pack first day, the second day was a more leisurely one where a tour of the Baomo Garden in Panyu was planned.

No sooner than the group alighted from the buses that the campers were already getting ready to find feed for thousands of carps they knew lying in wait for them in the ponds.

A leisurely tour of the garden and a boat ride at the pond after lunch brought the 2nd day to a close.

Time flew too quickly when having fun and very soon it was time to say goodbye to our group of happy mainland camper friends. We all bid a hasty but reluctant farewell to each other and knew that we would see each other again very soon!
